Tile Taster Workshop
21st and 22nd May 2022 10am – 1pm
Price: £50 per person which includes all materials, glazing and firing tiles, refreshments.
Katie at The Hidden House has kindly emptied one of her garages for us to use as a workshop space. I intend to run a 2 hour workshop, maximum four people with an hour break in the middle where you can go up to the house and look round the fabulous artworks or have a cup of tea.
I will introduce you to a few of the different methods I use to make tiles. We will then set about rolling out some clay slabs for you to make a tile maximum 6” x 6”. We will us cutout paper resists and slips to create simple designs.
We have an hour break (roughly) so the clay can stiffen a bit so it is easier to work into.
You can use my stamps and plaster moulds to experiment and I will explain the simple sgraffito technique. I will bring some tiles too that you can decorate.
What to Bring
Bring an apron. It would be brilliant, but not essential, if you could bring a design with you and, when you enrol on the workshop, I will send you images of the sort of designs that work best.
After the Workshop
I will fire anything you make in my kiln and then glaze it with clear glaze and fire again. I will arrange with you for collection or delivery of your tiles.
To sum up, it is a brief taster but you will end up with a tile or some small test tiles to keep as a memento of the experience.
There is no running water in the garage but I will have big buckets of water and a hose so we can manage. You will need to wear an apron. Loos and hot water are in the house. The Hidden House opens at 11am so people will be looking into the garage as they go past. Be aware you may become part of the ‘Open House experience’!
